On Monday 21 November, the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) and Feedback EU published a report on the uneven ambitions of EU Member States regarding legally binding targets to halve food waste in the EU by 2030.
The list of respective ambitions is the result of a questionnaire sent by NGOs to the relevant ministries in each Member State between June and September.
Romania, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Estonia expressed their support for the introduction of legally binding targets for Member States to reduce EU food waste from farm to fork by 50% by 2030, which the NGOs welcome.
Others, such as Austria, Denmark, the Czech Republic and Croatia, also expressed support for binding EU targets, but without clearly supporting a 50% reduction.
Poland, Malta, Slovenia and Portugal, on the other hand, are currently opposed to Member States being set binding targets. Greece and Latvia are also opposed to this, preferring lower targets for limited parts of the supply chain.
Many other Member States currently remain neutral or undecided.
In September, these NGOs denounced the fact that food waste in the EU exceeded the volume of food imported (see EUROPE 13025/7).
