European Investment Bank releases €400,000 to prepare for reconstruction of town of Kharkiv’s tram network

The European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Kharkiv City Council launched a partnership on Friday 11 November in preparation for the project for the purchase of a new tram fleet and the reconstruction of war-damaged tram infrastructure.

To this end, the EIB will make available a technical assistance grant of €400,000. This will be a non-repayable grant.

We need to be ready to start rebuilding Ukraine on the first day it wins this war. This means we need to start preparing reconstruction plans right now”, commented EIB Vice-President and in charge of EIB Operations in Ukraine, Teresa Czerwińska.

The modernisation of Kharkiv’s tram network had already been approved before the Russian-led invasion of Ukraine and is part of the city’s development programme for the period 2021-2025.

The EIB has supported various transport projects in Kharkiv in the past. In June 2017, a €160 million loan for the extension and modernisation of the city’s metro system was granted. In 2020, another loan of 10 million was granted for the modernisation of the city’s trolleybus fleet. (Original version in French by Thomas Mangin)
