14/11/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 11 November, the European Commission opened a four-week consultation period on harmonised rail operations and traffic management at EU level. In concrete terms, it intends to examine several aspects of the text in the context of the revision of the current rules, such as documentation for drivers, documentation for the infrastructure manager’s staff authorising the movement of trains, and the functional and technical features of the subsystems used. The focus should also be on cross-border operations. In addition, the future rules should also serve to increase infrastructure capacity, “in particular where based on the European traffic management system” the Commission says. The future specifications and standards, it argues, should also increase rail’s contribution to the decarbonisation of the European transport sector.
