The French and British governments signed a joint declaration on Monday 14 November in which they pledged to strengthen their cooperation to reduce the number of migrants crossing the English Channel.
The agreement signed provides for Paris to increase its security forces by 40% to prevent these crossings, with 350 additional police officers and gendarmes, against a budget of €72 million paid to Paris for 2022 and 2023 according to AFP. According to the British government, 40,000 people have crossed the Channel since the beginning of the year.
London and Paris have also set themselves the goal of deploying technological and human resources, including drones, on the French coast to better detect, monitor and intercept boats, AFP adds.
Reception centres for migrants are also to be created in the south of France to deter migrants travelling across the Mediterranean from going back to Calais and to offer them safe alternatives. (Original version in French by Solenn Paulic)
