The European Union adopted new sanctions against Burmese individuals and entities on Tuesday 8 November, which came into force the same day. This is the fifth package of sanctions. It targets 19 individuals and one entity.
These include the Minister of Investment and International Economic Relations, Kan Zaw, the President of the Supreme Court of Justice, Htun Htun Oo, senior army officers, etc. The National Board of Directors is also targeted.
This new set of sanctions brings the number of individuals whose assets in the EU are frozen and who are banned from European territory to 84. There are now 11 entities. Other sanctions are in place against Myanmar, including export restrictions, and an embargo on arms and certain equipment.
Myanmar is also no longer receiving financial assistance from the EU. On the other hand, the country still benefits from the trade advantages of the ‘Everything But Arms’ regime, which allows it to export its products (except arms and ammunition) to the EU without any tariffs or quotas.
The new sanctions follow repeated calls by the EU in recent months to release Burmese political prisoners (see EUROPE 13033/24) and to stop human rights violations. In July, Myanmar executed four political opponents (see EUROPE 13000/14).
