31/10/2022 (Agence Europe) – The European Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy, Olivér Várhelyi, launched a cooperation project on Sunday 30 October between the EU, Egypt, France and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Speaking in Cairo, Mr Várhelyi explained that, thanks to the €80 million contract, the Europeans will provide the Egyptian coast guard and border guards with rescue equipment “for effective border surveillance and search and rescue operations on land and at sea”. “We are fully aware of the immense needs in terms of securing your borders and cracking down on smuggling networks and organised crime groups”, he added. The first deliveries will amount to €23 million this year and €57 million next year. (CG)
