On Friday 14 October, the European Commission adopted a proposal on fishing opportunities for 2023 in the Mediterranean and Black Seas.
In particular, the proposal reflects the 2030 strategy of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM), which is the competent regional fisheries management organisation.
For the Mediterranean, the proposal includes measures for red coral and dolphinfish, in line with adopted GFCM decisions. For the stocks where the GFCM transitional measures are expiring at the end of 2022 (such as blackspot seabream and deep-water shrimp), the proposal will be updated after the annual GFCM session (7-11 November).
In the Adriatic Sea, for small pelagic stocks, the proposal includes a further level of reduction of catches. For demersal stocks, it proposes a decrease of the fishing effort.
Black Sea. The proposal maintains the current level of the total allowable catch (TAC) for sprat in 2023. For turbot, the quotas will be set and adopted at the annual GFCM session.
The EU Council will set these TACs at its meeting on 12-13 December.
