21/09/2022 (Agence Europe) – “The European Union is appalled by reports of at least ten children being killed as army helicopters opened fire over a school in Tabayin, Myanmar”, said European External Action Service (EEAS) spokesperson Nabila Massrali on Tuesday 20 September. The death toll has risen to 11 since the EEAS announcement. The Burmese army has admitted hitting the school on 16 September but denies killing any children. It says it acted against rebels. “To undertake such military action over a civilian target is against international humanitarian law and must be fully investigated”, said Nabila Massrali. She then added: “The European Union calls for an immediate end to all attacks on schools”. The EU has so far sanctioned 65 individuals and 10 entities in Myanmar (see EUROPE 12895/3). (LM)
