Fight against antimicrobial resistance, first list of banned veterinary medicinal products

Stella Kyriakides, the European Commissioner for Health, announced, on Monday 4 July, the upcoming adoption of a tool against antimicrobial resistance.

In a comitology procedure, the EU Member States agreed to the adoption by the European Commission of a first list of antimicrobials reserved for human use. Six months after the adoption of the implementing regulation, the medicinal products listed in the Annex to the act may no longer be included among veterinary medicinal products or offered for use in animal feed.

In concrete terms, veterinary medical products containing these antimicrobials or groups of antimicrobials will no longer be eligible for a European marketing authorisation. In addition, marketing authorisations for such medicines already on the market will no longer be valid.

This decision is taken under Regulation EU/2019/6, which is intended to contribute to the EU’s ‘One Health’ Action Plan against antimicrobial resistance and the ‘Farm to Fork’ strategy.

The list has been drawn up in accordance with the criteria of Implementing Regulation EU/2021/1760 and on the basis of the scientific opinion published on 25 May by the Committee for Veterinary Medicinal Products of the European Medicines Agency together with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and the European Food Safety Authority as well as Member State experts (see EUROPE 12902/39)
