On Monday 20 June, the European Commission proposed temporary rules on Ukrainian driving documents to allow Ukrainian nationals residing in the EU to use their driving licences without having to obtain an EU licence or take a repeat driving test.
“People fleeing Ukraine and seeking refuge in the EU must be able to move freely in the Union, which means they must be able to continue to use their driving licences without having to change them or take additional tests ”, said Transport Commissioner Adina Vălean.
New rules have also been proposed for Ukrainian truck and bus drivers, who will be able to extend the validity of their Ukrainian certificate of professional competence after completing a short training course and test.
“Ukrainian truck drivers are on the front line of transporting goods to and from Ukraine, including grain. We need to ensure that they can continue their work without having to go through lengthy administrative procedures regarding their driving documents ”, added Ms Vălean.
The Commission’s proposal must now be considered by the European Parliament and the Council of the EU. (Original version in French by Thomas Mangin)
