09/06/2022 (Agence Europe) – The NGO T&E published a study, on Thursday 9 June, in which it estimates that sustainable fuel producers in Europe could produce 1.83 million tonnes of e-kerosene annually by 2030. This fuel, generated by combining hydrogen and carbon dioxide, would then account for 3.65% of the EU’s aviation fuel demand and could save some 5 million tonnes of CO2, the NGO says. In the shorter term, the study adds that 0.16 million tonnes of e-kerosene could be produced by 2025. However, two conditions must be met for e-kerosene to have near-zero emissions: the hydrogen must be produced using additional renewable electricity and the carbon dioxide must be captured from the atmosphere by a ‘direct air capture’ (DAC) process. However, T&E’s analysis shows that only 7 out of 22 producers are currently planning to include DAC as a CO2 source. (TM)
