On the initiative of the EPP group, the leaders of the European Parliament’s political groups called, on Thursday 9 June, on the Heads of State or Government, who will meet on 23 and 24 June, to decide on the applications for EU membership of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia.
“We strongly appeal to you to grant EU candidate status to Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, in line with Article 49 of the Treaty on European Union and as the start to a merit-based process, and to work towards granting the same status to Georgia, fulfilling the legitimate aspirations of the Georgian people”, they said in a statement to the EU leaders.
They said the EU must show “courage, resolve and vision” in the context of the war in Ukraine and a deteriorating international environment.
“The European Union must be a reliable partner and a credible geopolitical actor that lives up to its principles and values by showing solidarity with those who stand up for the same ideals”, say the political group leaders.
The declaration also calls for the expectations of the Western Balkan countries not to be overlooked.
The European Commission is due to publish its opinions on the membership applications of Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova in the coming days. On the basis of these opinions, the European Council must decide whether or not to grant the three countries candidate status for EU membership.
