07/06/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday, 7 June, the European Commission announced that the EU quickly mobilised support for Albania in order to fight forest fires on the island of Sazan, in the municipality of Vlora. Through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, a firefighting airplane was deployed from Greece to assist 250 Albanian ground forces in limiting the fires’ spread. Last weekend, Greece also activated the EU’s Copernicus satellite service in order to monitor fires in southern Athens and assess the damage to infrastructures, houses, and buildings. The EU’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC)—which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week—is in constant contact with the Albanian and Greek authorities so as to monitor the situation closely.
