At a meeting of the EU Council’s Working Party on Aviation on Tuesday 7 June, EU Member States discussed the forthcoming election of the next Director General of the air transport network manager, Eurocontrol, which will take place on 28 June.
In a note sent to the Member States for the Working Party meeting, the Commission services invite them to vote for the candidate who “demonstrates a thorough understanding of the future challenges”, including the transformation towards a “more digitalised and cyber-secure environment”.
Four candidates, nominated by their respective States, are in the running for the post of Director General of Eurocontrol: Ingrid Cherfils, Strategic Director of the Swedish Aviation Agency, Jan Klas, CEO of the Czech Air Navigation Service Provider, Patrick Ky, current Executive Director of the European Aviation Safety Agency and Raul Medina Caballero, Director of the Spanish Civil Aviation Agency.
As an observer, the EU - represented by the European Commission - will not be able to take part in the selection process of the future Director General. Only Eurocontrol members may participate and the election is held in camera.
The post of Director General will be filled before the end of 2022. The current Director, Eamonn Brennan, had notified the Chair of the Provisional Council in December 2021 that he would not seek to renew his mandate. This will expire next December.
