European Commission adopts its contingency plan to strengthen transport resilience in times of crisis

The European Commission adopted on Monday 23 May a contingency plan for transport to strengthen its resilience in times of crisis.

The contingency plan presented today, based in particular on the lessons learned from and initiatives taken during the Covid-19 pandemic, creates a solid framework for an EU transport sector. I strongly believe that this plan will be a key driver of transport resilience, as many of its tools have already played a key role in supporting Ukraine”, said Transport Commissioner Adina Vălean.

In concrete terms, with this plan, the European Commission intends to develop a toolbox of 10 actions to guide Member States and the EU when emergency measures are taken.

Thus, in addition to ensuring “adequate” support for the transport sector or the management of refugee flows, the plan provides guarantees for the free movement of goods and people, the strengthening of cyber security or, among other things, the introduction of emergency tests in the transport sector.

The plan should quickly serve to increase support to Ukraine as grain exports and humanitarian aid imports remain complicated in the country (see EUROPE 12954/12).
