13/05/2022 (Agence Europe) – The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, went to Hiroshima on Friday 13 May to visit the National Peace Memorial for the victims of the atomic bomb, the day after the EU-Japan summit (see EUROPE 12951/6). “I leave this museum seized by an intense determination to rid the world of weapons of mass destruction”, he said. “As we speak, global security is under threat. Russia, a nuclear-armed state, and a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, is attacking the sovereign nation of Ukraine, while making shameful and unacceptable references to the use of nuclear weapons”. He also referred to the nuclear missile tests in North Korea. He noted that Japan and the EU were united on the dismantling of Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons as well as on the efforts to be made on Iran’s nuclear issue. (LM)
