05/05/2022 (Agence Europe) – The final version of REPowerEU, scheduled for 18 May (see EUROPE 12906/4), will include a European plan to promote energy savings, Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson announced on Thursday 5 May, at the 12th annual EU Think Tank organised by theEuropean University Institute (EUI). The aim is not only to contribute to the fight against climate change but also to support the effort to reduce the EU’s energy dependence on Russia. “Saving energy is a deliberate act of resistance that each of us can do”, Simson said. The Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Fatih Birol, said that the implementation of energy-saving policies was now essential in order to avoid “rationings of natural gas this winter in Europe”.
