05/05/2022 (Agence Europe) – While Russia has decided to suspend gas deliveries to Poland and Bulgaria, the Lithuanian, Polish and Latvian presidents inaugurated on Thursday 5 May the GIPL (Gas Interconnection Poland-Lithuania) pipeline linking Poland and Lithuania, in the presence of European Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson. The 508 km long pipeline is the first gas interconnection between the Eastern Baltic Sea region and continental Europe. It aims to strengthen the energy security of the Baltic countries by integrating their gas systems into the EU’s internal market and thus represents “a further step in the EU’s efforts to diversify its energy security away from unreliable Russian fossil fuel”, the European Commission said. The inauguration took place in the same week as the start of work on a new floating liquefied natural gas terminal in Alexandroúpolis, Greece. (DG)
