26/04/2022 (Agence Europe) – Fifty MEPs wrote a joint letter to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, on Saturday 23 April, calling on him to support an EU embargo on Russian oil. While they understand Germany’s fears about the economic costs if Russia decides to cut off gas supplies to the country in response to the oil embargo, the signatories say these fears “are highly overstated”. “Analyses show that in the short run, a stop of Russian energy imports would lead to a GDP growth decline in the range of 0.5% to 3% (...), while the Russian economy would decline by 30-40% by the end of the year”, the letter said. Insisting on the need to stop indirectly financing the Russian “war machine”, MEPs call on Berlin to “take a stand on the right side of history”. See the letter: https://aeur.eu/f/1d6 (DG)
