09/02/2022 (Agence Europe) – Case C-121/21 between the Czech Republic and Poland concerning the Polish Turów mine has been dropped following an out-of-court settlement between the two parties, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) announced on Tuesday 8 February. This announcement confirms recent statements by the Polish Prime Minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, who welcomed the agreement to withdraw the Czech complaint in exchange for financial compensation (€45 million, according to Reuters) for environmental damage caused by the mine on the Czech border (see EUROPE 12883/15). On Monday, the European Commission informed Warsaw that it would be withholding around €15 million from the EU budget allocated to Poland for its refusal to pay the daily penalty of €500,000 imposed by the CJEU for failing to cease operations at the mine (see EUROPE 12886/19).
