09/02/2022 (Agence Europe) – The European External Action Service spokesman recalled on Wednesday 9 February that the EU stands by the Belarusian people “as they seek a safe, sovereign, democratic and prosperous future” as 18 months have passed since the “falsified elections” in August 2020. “One year and a half on, the Lukashenko regime in Belarus continues wide-spread human rights violations and its brutal repression against all segments of the Belarusian society”, he denounced. The spokesman recalled that there are more than 1,040 political prisoners in the country, including 33 media professionals, whose immediate release he called for, and that new politically motivated convictions are reported every day. He said the EU and its international partners were working to ensure that justice was done for the victims and that the perpetrators were held accountable. (CG)
