09/02/2022 (Agence Europe) – Italian Brigadier General Roberto Viglietta has been appointed Force Commander of the European Unions military mission to help train Somali security forces (EUTM Somalia) starting 9 February 2022, according to a decision published in the EU Official Journal on the same day. He replaces his compatriot Fabiano Zinzone, who has held this post since 9 August 2020. Furthermore, according to a decision published on 8 February, the executive sub-task of contributing to the fight against drug trafficking off the coast of Somalia of the EU military operation Atalanta has been activated. The main objective of this mission is to contribute to the deterrence, prevention and repression of acts of piracy and armed robbery off the coast of Somalia. (CG)
