5G, Commission adopts implementing decisions to adapt conditions of use of radio spectrum to technological developments

The European Commission adopted on Wednesday 9 February several implementing decisions on the deployment and conditions of use of 5G networks.

The first of these concerns the harmonisation of the radio spectrum for short-range devices. This implementing decision is intended to update the conditions for the use of radio spectrum by taking better account of technological developments in the fields, in particular, of intelligent transport systems (ITS), where the monitoring and transmission of data generated by vehicles can be improved in order to increase the reliability and safety of ITS.

In addition, the Commission also adopted a second implementing decision on updated technical conditions for Wi-Fi networks in vehicles, aircraft and drones. This initiative is intended to reduce possible harmful interference to other devices that use the spectrum, such as weather radar and equipment used for Earth and space exploration.

Finally, the European Commission also adopted an implementing decision on the 900 MHz and 1,800 MHz frequency bands. This initiative, in turn, should make these frequency bands ready for use by 5G applications, while ensuring technological and service neutrality.
