MEPs call for gender equality to be priority in EU external policy

27/01/2022 (Agence Europe)The report by Chrysoula Zacharopoulou (Renew Europe, France) on the external component of the EU’s Gender Action Plan III was adopted on 26 January (48 votes in favour, 5 against and 7 abstentions) by MEPs from the Parliament’s Committee on Development and Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality (see EUROPE 12784/12). According to the report, 85% of EU development spending should be devoted to gender equality as a primary or significant objective. Six priorities have been identified for the advancement of women’s and girls’ rights: eliminating all gender-based violence, guaranteeing access to sexual and reproductive health and rights, promoting economic and social equality, fostering women’s leadership, involving women in peace and security processes, and promoting access and training in digital tools.
