27/01/2022 (Agence Europe) – The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe ratified the credentials of the Russian delegation on Wednesday 26 January (97 votes in favour, 41 against). These were challenged at the opening of the plenary on Monday by representatives of the Ukrainian and Lithuanian delegations, supported by the required number of parliamentarians from five national delegations. This endorsement is accompanied by a call to the Russian authorities to, inter alia, implement all the Assembly’s human rights recommendations since 2008, resolve the case of Alexei Navalny and withdraw the troops stationed on the Ukrainian borders and end the military tension. The Assembly points out that it can only play “a meaningful role” in political dialogue if Russia is a member of the Council of Europe and participates fully in its activities.
