11/01/2022 (Agence Europe) – In 2020, the thirteen European Union Member States with nuclear power plants generated 683 512 GWh of nuclear electricity, or almost 25% of the Unions total electricity production, according to data published by Eurostat, the EUs statistical office, on Tuesday 11 January. Four countries together supplied more than three quarters of this nuclear electricity: France (52% of total production), Germany (9%), Spain (9%) and Sweden (7%). Based on expert forecasts, the European Commissioner for Internal Market, Thierry Breton, estimated, at a press briefing on Tuesday 11 January, that the share of nuclear power in the EU’s electricity production will be around 15% by 2050. Nuclear power generation in absolute terms will nevertheless be higher than today, as the Commissioner expects electricity generation to double by 2050.
