11/01/2022 (Agence Europe) – The European External Action Service (EEAS) has deplored in a statement the decision of a special court in Myanmar to sentence State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi to four years’ imprisonment in one part of her trial. “It represents another step towards the dismantling of the Rule of law and a further blatant violation of human rights in Myanmar and yet another major setback for democracy in Myanmar”, said EEAS spokeswomen Nabila Massrali. She reiterates the EEAS’s call for the unconditional and immediate release of all political prisoners. In December, Aung San Suu Kyi was sentenced to four years in prison for inciting public disorder and violating health regulations related to Covid-19. The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, had already condemned this decision (see EUROPE 12847/15). (LM)
