The chairwoman of the S&D group in the European Parliament, Iratxe García Pérez from Spain, “regretted” on Tuesday 14 December the “lack of commitment of the EPP” regarding the deterioration of the rule of law in Slovenia.
The European Parliament will vote on Thursday on a resolution on the subject, co-signed by the S&D, Renew Europe, Greens/EFA and The Left, but not by the EPP, which has four Slovenian MEPs from the country’s ruling parties.
“You cannot say that you are ambitious in terms of the rule of law in some countries and not in others”, García Pérez insisted at a press conference.
Stéphane Séjourné, president of Renew Europe, also spoke to the press on Tuesday. He did not challenge the EPP directly, but called for “a change on the part of the Slovenian government”.
The draft resolution addresses in particular the issue of the appointment of Slovenian Delegated Prosecutors to the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO - see EUROPE 12836/25, EUROPE 12781/4).
MEPs “welcome, after a delay of six months, [this] appointment”, but express “concerns” about changes proposed by the Slovenian Ministry of Justice, which would, they explain, retroactively change the appointment criteria and could lead to the dismissal of the two appointed prosecutors.
