EU Member states painfully negotiate 2022 fishing quotas

13/12/2021 (Agence Europe)EU fisheries ministers continued, until late Monday 13 December, negotiations on total allowable catches (TACs) and quotas for 2022 in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. A first draft compromise included some progress for fishing countries, such as smaller reductions for: cod in the Kattegat, southern hake (-12%, compared to -18% in the initial proposal), pollack (TAC reductions of 5 or 10%) or some sole stocks. For the Western Mediterranean, the European Commission has agreed not to extend the 7.5% reduction in fishing effort for long-liners, which is due to affect trawlers in 2022. Spain, Italy and France oppose a 7.5% reduction in fishing effort in the area. The Commission has increased the TACs for deep water shrimp. (LC)
