EU pledges €2.5 billion until 2024 to fight malnutrition worldwide

At the Nutrition for Growth (N4G) summit in Tokyo on Tuesday 7 December, the European Commission pledged €2.5 billion to fight malnutrition over the period 2021-2024. This international event brought together representatives of governments, donors, philanthropists, businesses and NGOs, to accelerate progress in the fight against malnutrition.

The EU envelope will combine humanitarian and development aid for countries in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean that prioritise nutrition in their cooperation with the EU.

It will fund action in nutrition-related sectors - including agriculture, water, sanitation and hygiene, social protection, and health and education - with a focus on women, adolescent girls and children under five.

The funding announced is the result of joint programming of development aid by the Commission and EU Member States, for example in Laos, or cooperation to increase investment in nutrition.

Humanitarian aid will support the most vulnerable populations in countries in crisis, including Afghanistan, Yemen, Ethiopia and the Sahel region. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
