On Wednesday 8 December, the European Commission launched an online tool to provide geospatial information to companies and energy infrastructure planners.
This was one of the initiatives announced by the European Commission in its new industrial strategy published last May (see EUROPE 12713/6).
Called the ‘Energy and Industry Geography Lab’, this mapping interface was developed by the Joint Research Centre (the European Commission’s internal scientific body) in collaboration with the companies concerned.
It provides online management, visualisation and analysis of energy and industry data to help policymakers plan the key changes needed to decarbonise the economy.
Among other things, the tool indicates where renewable energy infrastructure is located, whether the necessary infrastructure is in place, and whether land is available for renewable energy installation.
Welcoming the launch of the new tool, Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton said: “The Energy and Industry Geography Lab will help industry, policymakers and national authorities to plan the key changes needed to decarbonise the economy and shape industrial ecosystems on the road to a climate-neutral transition.
