08/12/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 8 December, several major players in the inland waterway and intermodal transport sector called for clarification of some of the measures included in the ‘Fit for 55’ package presented by the European Commission on 14 July (see EUROPE 12848/13). These organisations believe that a full or partial tax exemption for electricity supplied to ships at berth could encourage the industry to switch to cleaner energy before 2030. In addition to a call for greater coherence between the ‘Fit for 55’ proposals and existing EU legislation, the signatories of the joint declaration insist on the need for a “constructive dialogue with the EU institutions” as well as on the establishment of public funding to achieve the environmental objectives set by the Commission.
