07/12/2021 (Agence Europe) – In a letter addressed to the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation on 30 November and made public on Tuesday 7 December, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Dunja Mijatović, urges the Russian Prosecutor General, Igor Krasnov, to drop the liquidation proceedings against “two prominent Russian NGOs, the International Historical, Educational, Charity and Human Rights Society Memorial, on the grounds of the ‘foreign agents’ law”. Ms Mijatović recalls that several Council of Europe bodies have found that this law infringing on the freedoms of expression and association is contrary to the obligations of Member States to create the necessary conditions for civil society organisations to work safely. Liquidation procedures are neither necessary nor proportionate, says the Commissioner, calling on the Russian authorities to “change their attitude”. Link to the letter: https://bit.ly/3Ezp4G3 (VL)
