30/11/2021 (Agence Europe) – While it considers the European Green Deal to be essential as a transformative model for ‘green’ growth, the European Environment Agency (EEA) stresses in a report published on Tuesday 30 November that doubts remain as to whether endless economic growth is possible, given nature’s limited capacity to provide resources and absorb pollution. According to the EEA, Europe should also seek to transform its economy so that it can ensure the well-being of society even if GDP contracts. It therefore calls for changes to tax systems, as well as more ambitious measures to reorient economic activity at all levels, from local innovators to multinationals. Underlining the critical importance of reconfiguring financial flows, the EEA believes that Europe needs to build on the EU’s sustainable finance agenda to move faster and further.
