30/11/2021 (Agence Europe) – European External Action Service spokesperson Nabila Massrali called on the Chinese government on Tuesday 30 November to provide verifiable evidence of the safety, well-being and whereabouts of Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai, who disappeared after posting allegations of sexual assault on Chinese social media. “Her recent public reappearance does not ease concerns about her safety and freedom”, said the spokesperson in a statement. The EU is therefore joining international demands for assurances that Peng Shuai is free and not under threat. Ms Massrali also called on the Chinese authorities to conduct a full, fair and transparent investigation into Shuai’s allegations of sexual assault. Ms Massrali also noted that the EU strongly opposes the practice of enforced disappearances and arbitrary detention. (CG)
