EU “strongly” condemns military coup

26/10/2021 (Agence Europe)The EU strongly condemns the military coup in the Republic of the Sudan”, declared High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell on 26 October. He called for the immediate release of several political leaders, including Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, and several ministers (see EUROPE 12819/17). Mr Borrell also denounced “the statement of General Burhan declaring nationwide state of emergency, the suspension of key articles of the Constitutional Document and the dissolution of governing bodies”. The High Representative warned, “This attempt to undermine Sudan’s transition towards democracy is unacceptable” and, if prolonged, could have “serious consequences for EU’s engagement, including its financial support”. He also called for the bloodshed to end and for access to communication networks to be restored without delay. (MB)
