26/10/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is preparing a scientific opinion for September 2022 assessing the risk of spreading antimicrobial resistant bacteria during animal transport, EFSA announced on Monday 25 October. The assessment will focus on the risk of spreading zoonotic bacteria - which are transmissible to humans and can also compromise the effectiveness of antibiotics in humans - among poultry, pigs and cattle. This scientific opinion was requested by the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI). “This new mandate illustrates once again the need for a ONE Health approach by assessors and policy-makers”, commented EFSA’s Chief Scientist Marta Hugas. EFSA recently published a scientific opinion on antimicrobial resistance in the food production environment (see EUROPE 12741/12). (AN)
