EU calls for immediate release of government members and avoidance of bloodshed

The EU condemns the detention of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and other members of the civilian leadership by Sudan’s military forces” and calls for their immediate release, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, said on the afternoon of Monday 25 October.

We call on the security forces to immediately release those they have unlawfully detained. The actions of the military represent a betrayal of the revolution, the transition, and the legitimate requests of the Sudanese people for peace, justice and economic development”, according to his statement issued on behalf of the EU27.

Mr Borrell highlighted that “the right of peaceful protest must be respected”, and that “violence and bloodshed must be avoided at all costs”. He also urges communication networks to be open.

The EU assures that it will continue to support those working for a democratic Sudan with a fully legitimate civilian government ensuring peace, freedom and justice for the Sudanese people”.

Asked at midday about the events that took place early on Monday morning, spokeswoman Nabila Massrali said the EU was in contact with the African Union.

Earlier on Monday, the High Representative expressed his utmost concern and took to Twitter to call for “all stakeholders and regional partners to put back on track the transition process”. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
