25/10/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 22 October, the European Commission launched a call for contributions on the development of an EU strategy for the “safe and sustainable use of space”. The objective of the Communication, which is expected to be presented in the second quarter of 2022 (see EUROPE 12815/2), is to set out the methods for developing space surveillance and orbital tracking capabilities (EUSST), to develop European standards for space traffic management at national and international level, in line with the Union's Common Foreign and Security Policy and Common Security and Defence Policy. With the global boom in space activity, Member States are working on the development of a European space traffic management system following the Portuguese Presidency’s roadmap (see EUROPE 12729/4).
