Future rules against imported deforestation in EU, Greens/EFA Group reiterates European Parliament’s expectations

21/10/2021 (Agence Europe)Ahead of the proposed EU legal framework to combat imported deforestation in the EU expected on 17 November, the Greens/EFA published their letter to the European Commission on Wednesday 20 October to reiterate the expectations of the European Parliament. The letter reiterates the demand for the protection of all valuable ecosystems and not just forests, the protection of the human rights of indigenous peoples, and a due diligence for all products and countries of origin, “without a minimal risk category”, which would also apply to financial institutions operating in the EU. These were the recommendations contained in a resolution adopted a year ago (see EUROPE 12586/21). In September, Delara Burkhardt (S&D, Germany), rapporteur for this dossier, pointed out shortcomings in a European Commission working document (see EUROPE 12793/6). (AN)
