EU announces €119 million in additional aid for Yemenis

The European Commission announced, on Wednesday 22 September, an additional €119 million - €44 million in humanitarian aid and €75 million in development aid - to alleviate the Yemenis’ suffering, victims of more than 6 years of conflict and the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.

The Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, was participating on the same day in a joint EU-Swedish-Swiss side event at the UN General Assembly to mobilise funds for the country, where almost 70% of the population is in need of humanitarian assistance and where human development has been set back by 20 years.

EU humanitarian aid will fund food and nutritional aid, health care and protection for those who are vulnerable.

Development assistance will help local authorities to provide and maintain basic services, including health, education, water and energy. It will help generate income for vulnerable households by providing them with livelihood opportunities in the cultural heritage preservation sector and supporting private entrepreneurship.

The EU’s strong signal to other donors is that Yemen’s developmental gains for post-conflict recovery must be preserved”, said the Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen.

This funding will bring EU aid to Yemen to €209 million in 2021. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
