Synchronisation of Baltic countries with European electricity grid is progressing

26/08/2021 (Agence Europe)A third electricity connection between Estonia and Latvia was inaugurated on Wednesday, 25 August, in the presence of European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson, who welcomed “a further important step towards the synchronisation of the Baltic States with the European energy network”. According to the European Commission, this new connection will not only improve the security of supply and strengthen the grid, but it will also facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid, thus helping reduce the European Union’s greenhouse gas emissions. With power lines over 360 km long, the new connection has a total capacity of 600 MW. The total cost of its construction was €172 million, of which €112 million was financed by the EU through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), as it is a project of common interest (PCI). (DG)
