More than 2,000 Polish judges call on government to respect Court of Justice of EU rulings

More than 2,000 Polish judges launched, on Tuesday 27 July, an appeal to the Polish government and to the president of the Supreme Court to uphold European law and to implement the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) rulings.

The appeal was signed by 2,073 Polish judges, including more than 400 judges in Krakow, the RuleoflawinPoland website reported. Supreme Court judges also signed the appeal, as did judges of large and small courts, district, county, appellate and provincial administrative court judges, which represents 20% of all Polish judges, the site adds.

The appeal is coordinated by the Polish judges’ association Iustitia. It calls for the application of the CJEU rulings of 14 and 15 July (see EUROPE 12763/7, EUROPE 12762/23) concerning the Disciplinary Chamber of the Supreme Court, whose activities the CJEU has demanded be suspended immediately and declared contrary to EU law.

On 20 July, the European Commission also gave Poland one month to comply with the Court’s rulings or face a new infringement proceeding with daily financial penalties (see EUROPE 12766/3). (Original version in French by Solenn Paulic)
