28/07/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 27 July, the White House announced the appointment of Mark Gitenstein as Ambassador to the EU. This announcement was welcomed by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. “We have a big transatlantic and global agenda to take forward. We need all hands on deck, and I look forward to working with him when confirmed,” said Mr Michel on Twitter. This nomination must be approved by the US Senate. A lawyer by training, Mr Gitenstein is currently Senior Counsel at Mayer Brown LLP. He served as US Ambassador to Romania under the Obama Administration. He worked for 17 years in the US Senate. In 2008, Mr Gitenstein co-chaired then Senator Biden’s transition to the vice presidency. In 2021 he served as a senior advisor to, and member of, the advisory committee to the Biden presidential transition. (CG)
