22/07/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday, 20 July, the European External Action Service (EEAS) spokesperson congratulated Pedro Castillo after the Peruvian radical left candidate was declared the winner by the National Jury of Elections in a close presidential race; these elections were held in early June. His statement indicates that he praised the work of Peru’s electoral institutions, which had worked “in an effective and transparent manner” throughout the electoral process. The former teacher was declared the winner with 50.12% of the vote against 49.87% (44,263 votes difference) for his opponent, Keiko Fujimori, the daughter of former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori who was in power from 1990 to 2000.
