20/07/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission will launch a study to analyse the impact of the judgment of the Court of Justice of the European Union suspending the principle of reciprocity between countries in the field of copyright (case C-265/19) (see EUROPE 12563/30). While the EU provides significant protection for artists and producers, some third countries do not pay industry players when their works are broadcast on radio and television. In the United States alone, the amount at stake exceeds €125 million, the Independent Music Companies Association (IMPALA) estimated in a press release on Tuesday 20 July. “The principle of reciprocal treatment has been applied by many Member States for decades. The Commission’s decision to launch a study is a welcome first step”, said the Vice-Chairman of the European Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee, Ibán García Del Blanco. (TM)
