08/07/2021 (Agence Europe) – BusinessEurope sent a letter to the President of the European Commission on 7 July asking her to drop, for the time being, her proposal for a digital levy, which is expected to be presented on 20 July. “In light of the recent progress at the OECD Inclusive Framework, and considering that senior MEPs have asked the Commission to drop the proposal, we also urge you to think carefully about the consequences of bringing it forward at this critical juncture”, writes the organisation. BusinessEurope is concerned that the proposed EU tax could derail international negotiations on corporate tax reform (see EUROPE 12757/17), damage the EU’s relationship with the US or hamper European competitiveness. However, if the Commission decides to go ahead with this project, it should, at the very least, make clear to its institutional partners the risks involved, says the organisation.
