On Thursday 8 July, the European Commission launched a public consultation on an update, in the second quarter of 2022, of the EU’s strategic approach for the outermost regions (ORs), at a time of recovery and a transition to a greener, more digitally-based economy.
The public consultation will be open until 4 November. The aim is to adapt the existing partnership in order to make European action more effective in supporting the green and digital transition, but also to help these regions cope with the consequences of the pandemic - the ORs having been particularly affected because of their economic structure based largely on tourism and their infrastructure often less comprehensive and efficient than on the continent.
The renewed strategy also aims to support the ORs in preparing and implementing territorial development strategies and helping these regions take advantage of the opportunities offered by EU policies in the context of the Multiannual Financial Framework 2021-2027.
In general, the aim is to strengthen and extend the dialogue with the ORs and to renew the EU’s commitment to integrating the specificities of the ORs into all EU policies.
This consultation follows announcements by the Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira (see EUROPE 12720/27).
