The European Parliament on Thursday 8 July adopted a joint resolution by The Left, Greens/EFA, Renew Europe, S&D, ECR, and EPP groups (666 votes in favour, 5 against and 16 abstentions) calling for the annulment of the imminent execution of Swedish-Iranian professor Ahmadreza Djalali, for him to be pardoned, for his immediate and unconditional release, and for his return to Sweden.
MEPs also call on Iran to drop all charges against all EU nationals and British nationals arbitrarily detained in the country.
According to Parliament, the EU Council should consider additional targeted sanctions against officials and entities of the Iranian regime involved in the arbitrary detention and death sentences of EU nationals
MEPs also call on Tehran to release political prisoners, including human rights defenders arbitrarily detained for simply exercising their fundamental rights to freedom of expression, belief, association, publication, peaceful assembly, and media freedom.
