The European Parliament is maintaining pressure on the European Commission to take action to implement the Regulation establishing conditionality between the payment of EU funds and respect for the Rule of law in a Member State.
In a letter to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Parliament President David Sassoli calls on the Commission “to fulfil its obligations as Guardian of the Treaties and to ensure full and immediate application of the Regulation” introducing conditionality. In particular, the Commission is urged to stop self-imposing the obligation to wait for the interpretation of the Court of Justice on this mechanism negotiated in parallel with the agreement on the 2021-2027 Multiannual Financial Framework and subject to an appeal filed by Poland and Hungary.
This letter is based on a second Parliament resolution on the issue. In early June, he threatened to take the Commission to court himself for its inaction (see EUROPE 12738/3).
